RULES FOR 2008 GEORGE WASHINGTON BIRTHDAY PHOTO CONTEST

    • Entrants may compete in three age categories: Youth: for entrants 12 and under; Teen: for entrants 13-18; and Adults: for entrants 19 and older. Age category is based on the current age of the entrant, not the age of the photographer at the time the photograph was taken. If the entrant and the photographer are not one in the same, this must be indicated on the entry form. Failure to be truthful in the identification of the photographer may lead to disqualification.
    • Entrants must also indicate whether they are competing in the professional or amateur category. If the PHOTOGRAPHER has ever been paid for a photograph, in any capacity, he/she is considered a professional, and the photo must be entered into the professional category, even if the entrant is considered an amateur. Professional entries may not have been used previously as part of a professional business enterprise and must conform to the rules of the competition.
    • A completed entry form must accompany each entry. There is a maximum of (5) entries allowed per person. Multiple entries may be submitted together, as long as the material for each entry is clearly separated. All entries must be mailed to the Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson Street, Alexandria, VA 22314, Attn: GWBCC Photo Contest. All entries must be postmarked by 3/31/08. Entry forms may be typed or printed. Locally reproduced copies and word processor –produced equivalents are acceptable. This contest will be open for submissions from 2/01/07 to 3/31/08. Committee will not notify entrants of receipt of entries.
    • Non-winning entries will be returned only if entry is accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
    • All entrants, by submitting their photographs, consent to their pictures being used by the George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee for future marketing and publicity purposes. This includes non-winning entries, where the entrant has not asked for its return.
    • Winners’ names and the winning photographs will be published on the George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee website. Winning photographs may become the property of the George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee, if not requested to be returned to the photographer.
    • Photos entered for competition should reflect the spirit of George Washington, and may have been taken at any time in the committee’s history, during a George Washington Birthday event. Entrants may complete in multiple categories.
    • The first, second, and third-place winners will receive prizes and certificates. Other prizes from sponsors may also be awarded. All winners will receive congratulatory letters.
    • The judges will normally select only one first-, second-, and third-place winner in each category. Where no entry in a category is considered within contest standards, judges may choose to withhold any and all awards within that category. Judges will reserve the right to add or remove categories from the contest, if necessary. If a category is removed, entrants submitting photos in that category will be notified.
    • Still photography professionals from local and national organizations will conduct judging. It will take place during the month of April. Judges will evaluate photos on the photo’s excellence as a whole, technical quality, originality, and how well the photo depicts the atmosphere and character of the George Washington Committee’s mission.
    • Following the judging, the George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee will distribute a list of the winners to the sponsors; provide certificates and awards; prepare congratulatory letters to all winners and certificates for significant contributors; show the winners’ names and their photos on the GWBCC website; and prepare and distribute a news release.
    • Each submission is limited to the work of one entrant, must contain an entry form, and must be mailed prepaid.
